This DVD caused me to have a major life revelation! Stars crossed in the sky on Saturday, January 7, 2006, this past Saturday, because of this DVD, and it made this Karina’s birthday yesterday the best day of my life.
I met my boyfriend when we were in college back in 1998. I was into punk and ska a bit before I met him, but when I met him, we both got into it and we bought a lot of compilations put out by different labels.
We heard Dance Hall Crashers on Honest Don’s Greatest Shits and the song “Pick Up Lines” made us run out looking for any album by this band that we had never heard before, which band we believed could possibly the best band of all time.
LIving in a small town in Ontario, Canada, it wasn’t easy to find good CD’s, but we got lucky and we picked up “Honey I’m Homely” and I couldn’t believe when pulled off the shrink-wrap and dove into the liner notes only to find that MY NAME was printed in the sleeve!
That’s right, my name is Karina, and up until that moment I had never ever met or heard of anyone that had the same name as I have, not spelled the same, anyway, and on top of that, I was in love with this band! Dance Hall Crashers proved to me that there was something good to listen to in this world and “Honey I’m Homely” didn’t leave my player for at least a year until I got “Purr!”
But back in September of 1999, DHC came all the way up here to Canada from California, and since nobody I knew even heard of the band, I couldn’t believe it when my boyfriend told me there was a show and bought us tickets to go.
We got to the venue (Opera House in Toronto) early early and waited right at the entrance. I was too starstruck to even speak when my boyfriend saw Elise walk by us on the street! We were first in line at the show and we ran to the front and we rocked hard through two openers (Limp and No Use for a Name) and we just lost control when DHC took the stage and we were right centre front row! It was THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME!!!
Time went on and I was devastated when no more albums were coming out and it seemed that the band had split up. My boyfriend and I had all but given up on ever hearing new material from our favourite band.
Then on Saturday (when stars crossed, remember) my boyfriend had to work and when I was at home, also getting ready to go to work, I was thinking about my birthday which was coming up on Tuesday January 10th and what would be fun to do.
And then I remembered that DHC show way back in ‘99. I remembered it was the time of our lives, and I got out the Live Record to listen to it to remember how much fun we had….but it was so long ago, I feared I wouldn’t remember it anymore! I was turning 28 and I wondered if years of partying had fuzzed out my most precious memory!
Meanwhile, my boyfriend Andrew was out at work, and incidentally, he works at a mall, and just by chance he saw the DVD of Dance Hall Crashers. Neither one of us had heard of this DVD being released, in fact, neither one of us had listened to the band in such a long time, just because there hadn’t been anything new. He immediately bought the DVD for me for my birthday.
There was no way that Andrew could have known I was at home thinking of DHC and of the concert we went to or that I even got out the CD and actually listened to it. Andrew was at work, so there was no way that I could have known that he saw this DVD, and I had no idea that there even was any DVD.
Imagine my excitement when I opened that gift yesterday! I couldn’t believe that such a coincidence could have happened, and I made my boyfriend show me the receipt from the DVD to see what date and time he actually bought the DVD to prove that he didn’t know that I had been thinking of the concert.
We watched the DVD, had the best time ever remembering the show we went to, and the icing on the birthday cake of the whole day was realizing that this concert was actually NEW and not from back when PURR and the Live Album were released, like we thought. The band is back together and they even played a NEW SONG!
Andrew and I are staying together forever, too. No one can tell me we are not meant to be together when we have a connection like what happened on Saturday.
Thanks, Elise, Karina, Mikey, Jason, and Gavin for making my 28th birthday the best day of my life and for giving me the sign I needed! —Karina Andreasen-Case from Ontario, Canada
